The aim of my exploration is to make a vitality review for my place and henceforth use it to measure around the figure of different families with the exception of me that are rehearsing a similar way of life as mine so as to locate the entire result it can hold countrywide I will use every one of my discoveries furthering my potential benefit which incorporates, to a great extent of import to use vitality all the more speedily, forestall doing all in or all out conclusions refering vitality use what's more to look to design and additionally oversee vitality workss all the more wisely. Thus I can in any case use my outcomes to occur out the inclinations and types of vitality use additional time. My discoveries are as per the following, we have top and off-top periods o f vitality use, what's more we have sensibly satisfactory distinction in our measure explanations. Vitality reviews are non utile at all cost except if you will execute all the proposals expressed on the examination. Presentation Last twelvemonth in South Africa we began to see a deficiency gracefully again like 2008, of power from ESKOM which brought about weight sloughing and abbreviation as control measures to this issue. My speculation for this exploration is as per the following, there is an expansion or reduction of vitality ingestion in my place during top and off-top seasons. All the discoveries that I will deliver will be mirroring my home’s vitality ingestion. At the point when I did this examination I had somewhere in the range of scarcely any finishes in head that I needed to achieve, premier I need to execute down to earth strategies which are extremely solid in rescuing vitality, besides I need to do an awareness of what are the conceivable henceforth occasions that we can see as an outcome of enduring shot or-miss judgments sing vitality, thus I need them to do consider moves at whatever point they use power and my last design is to change over my folks to actualize each piece numerous a s conceivable of my suggestions with regards to control rescuing, from what I have I can express that my vitality study will help me and my family unit to achieve this activity we are by and by facing at the moment. Strategy In this region I will demo all my general logical procedure I used to get my outcomes intelligently. First I gathered all the snippets of data that I will require to do my endeavor a world, this includes:Energy measures, and general data about my place for example which gadgets do we use and to what extent do we use themBRIEF BACKGROUND ON ENERGY 1.1.1The contrast between a kW and a W A kW and a W the two of them measure a similar measure for example power ( the rate at which work is done ) , the solitary contrast is that a W is 1*10-3a kW, and the unit of estimating of kW.h is the work done ( for example the vitality ) the product of intensity and the clasp taken T. 1.1.2 How much vitality do you eat up in a month, twelvemonth, how would you figure these Numberss? I will assume that a month has 30 yearss for calculation purposes, consequently I will use table 1 on page 5 for all the significant qualities required in the calculations: Tocopherol ( kWh/day ) =P ( kilowatt ) *t ( h/day ) ?1000 ( w/kW ) and for the cost I will use this articulation Cost ( pennies/day ) =E ( kWh/day ) *Cost ( pennies/kWh ) ?100 ( pennies/R ) . Our levy charge in Nkomazi district is R1.3531 per kWh unit. Vitality In a month=E*30 yearss and in a twelvemonth is E*365 for a single contraption. Schedule a long time of the twelvemonth where power is devoured the most June-August is viewed as the clasp of the twelvemonth were the is a truly elevated interest of power due to the harsh conditions that are outside, individuals will in general arraign themselves into indoor exercises or sit in front of the Television for the entire twenty-four hours, furthermore because the very pinnacle of conditions individuals utilize a cluster of warming contraptions to keep up themselves warm during winter Devicess that expend a bunch of power in my familyall the gadgets that are featured in yellow in table 1.i utilized the articulation expressed underneath to figure this. Proposals on how you could chop down your vitality measureHeat the H2O with a kettle rather than a pot, flush your dishes using your authorities forestall using the lavation machine, ne'er leave your Fe unattended, buy another hypothetical record refrigerator since it spares more vitality. Guarantee that you unplug the microwave since it utilizes vitality to keep up the clock appear on. I propose that you keep using your roof fan than buying the forced air system. Sum you can rescue p/m on the off chance that you execute the above recommendationsthe total you can rescue is demonstrated on the reference section page,I accepted that you decline the clasp use by 5 % aside from the cooler. Detriments of utilizing my proposals expressed underneath You will plug up non wrapping your endeavors up to the maximal degree a decent representation is while using a figuring machine. Again when you cut the clasp for the noticeable radiation bulbs at long last you will be uninformed. Besides on the off chance that you need to cut the clasp for the refrigerator you will plug up holding ruined supplement material. Choice From this vitality review plainly in the event that you will use a contraption for a long clasp it will eat up a bunch of vitality, thusly despite the fact that a contraption have a lower power assessment however in the event that you will use it for a long clasp it will eat up a cluster of vitality. Sing the issue of cut bringing down the power measure for certain contraptions I don’t consider it to be a decent idea since you may plug up non working up to the pinnacle level of your endeavors. King Lear and Illigetimacy :: essays papers

Lord Lear and Illigetimacy Shakespeare’s treatment of wrongness in the play King Lear can be deciphered from multiple points of view contingent upon the crowd. The circumstance of wrongness is depicted through the connections of the characters the Earl Of Gloucester and his two children Edgar and Edmund. Edmund is the ill-conceived child while Edgar was conceived inside the law. We learn of Edmund’s wrongness in the initial scene in the principal demonstration where The Earl of Gloucester is holding a discussion with Kent while Edmund is close by. Gloucester talks carelessly and delicately of the manner in which his ill-conceived child appeared on the scene while acquainting him with Kent saying, â€Å" Though this scalawag came something saucily into the world before he was sent for, yet his mom was reasonable, there was acceptable game at his creation, and the whoreson must be acknowledged† (Act I, Scene I, Lines 19-24). There are a few curious things about this exchange. One of the intr iguing parts of Gloucester and Kent’s conversation is the availability of Gloucester to concede he has fathered a youngster without any father present. This might be affected by the way that Edmund had clearly developed into a child that a dad would be glad to have. From the outset meeting he appears to be considerate, obliging, and faithful. Maybe these honorable character qualities are cause for Gloucester’s eagerness to freely guarantee Edmund as his own. Another unordinary event in the initial exchange is that Gloucester calls Edmund a whoreson and a rapscallion while he is close by and most likely in hearing separation. This appears to be odd in light of the fact that Gloucester purports to feel just love for his child and no disgrace however he appears to practically deride him in this circumstance. One clarification for this conduct might be that where it counts Gloucester despite everything harbors some distress about the connection among himself and his child in spite of his verbal decrees of boldness. This could be surmised from Gloucester’s articulation, â€Å" His rearing, sir, hath been at my charge. I have so regularly become flushed to recognize him that now I am brazed to ‘t.† (Act I, Scene I, Line 9). Once more, contingent upon the crowd the perspectives showed in the play by the characters and Shakespeare himself by his composing can be deciphered in an assortment of ways relying upon the spectator. Initially Shakespeare’s played were seen by individuals alive during the Elizabethan period.

5 Awesome Things You Can Do Right Now with Blurb.com

5 Awesome Things You Can Do Right Now with Blurb.com Blurb is a self-publishing and marketing platform that allows for amateurs and professionals alike to publish professional quality printed magazines, books, and eBooks. The site was founded by Eileen Gittins in 2005 as a way for individuals to affordably and simply publish books of their own design. She personally desired for a way to publish her own photography in a professionally bound book.Over the next decade the company expanded to provide a variety of services and tools for artists and writers to publish their works. In 2008 the site won a Webby Award for Best Services website and then in 2010 was ranked #47 in the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing U.S. companies. It also earned the honor of ranking #1 in the media category and among the top five fastest-growing companies led by women. In 2018 Rix Kramlich was appointed Chief Executive Officer bringing his experience from his roles in Macromedia, i2 Technologies, and ABB.The site allows for users to design and create their own p hoto books, trade books, magazines, or eBooks. The user can design their own material or use Blurbs book publishing software, Bookwright. The software allows for the user to design their own product and easily submit a document that Blurb can then publish and prepare for sale. The site also provides information and tools for the user to sell their creations either through Blurbs website or through online distributors, such as Amazon, Ingram, and Apple iBooks store. Blurb promotes itself as a one-stop-shop that aids the user in every step of the way from creating the product to printing and selling. The user only needs to bring their ideas and creativity. The site also provides a series of articles that can inform the reader on a variety of subjects. The blog section is organized under three main topics: book-making, selling, and inspiration. It is tempting to go step by step through all of the awe-inspiring ideas included in the site, but rather than ruining your own exploration throu gh all of the information, I will highlight five awesome things you can do on Blurb.Blurb provides information and tools for the user to sell their creations either through Blurbs website or through online distributors, such as Amazon and Ingram.1. Be a better writerWriters block can get the best of any of us. Blurbs blog has several suggestions that can help you jump start your writing process. In the sites writing section, none of the articles are very long, but each of them provides suggestions to help you find a topic and get writing. You can also explore reviews of different apps that can help you focus and organize your work.Under the inspiration section, you can find articles on how different artists and writers created their projects and learn about what inspired them, such as the interview with childrens book author Megan Roy. She talks about her inspirations and what led her to make her own book on Blurb.Another article I really enjoy is Five great ways to combat writers b lock. The author outlines simple ways to get writing. One, just start writing. I like this advice. I use it with my students all the time. Sit down and write. It does not need to be good. It does not need to make sense. Just get words on paper. Two, pretend youre writing for yourself. This one is strange but works. Ignore any specific audience. Just write to you. You can always edit later to match a specific audience. Three, make sure it isnt something else. This one takes some self-reflection, but make sure there is not something else going on in your life that is keeping you from writing. Four, give yourself some space. Dont put too much pressure on yourself. Sometimes sitting and thinking or meditating is a critical part of the writing process. Take a walk or bake cookies. Just be careful you are not using those activities to procrastinate. There is a fine line between taking a mental break and just wasting time. Five, break it into smaller tasks. Focus on one task at a time.I wr ote my dissertation 500 words at a time. Every day I wrote 500 words, and then changed tasksâ€"either edited another section or analyzed some data or even read a book. I felt comfortable writing 500 words. Again, it did not need to be the most perfect 500 wordsâ€"just 500 words I actually wrote that day. I finished a 300+ page dissertation over time. Dont worry about the whole project at once. Break it down.2. Learn to take a better photoBlurb began as a way for Eileen Gittins to publish her own photography. Throughout the site are lots of tips and advice on how to better your own skills in photography. The topics range from social media photos to taking photos worthy of an art studio. The advice is written in a manner that someone with no or limited knowledge could understand and begin the process of making photography a serious hobby or possibly a career. I particularly enjoyed the essays on the history of photography, which takes the reader on a journey from the invention of film to Instagram. This section of the site has the most information, which is not surprising considering Blurbs beginnings.3. Promote yourselfOne of the other more developed areas of the site is the section on Promoting and Marketing. The authors help the reader understand the many different ways to promote your own work through self-publishing. The articles range from using Amazon and eBooks to effectively promoting yourself online. I particularly liked the suggestions for using writing communities to help you write and promote yourself as you begin to create your work. By having someone help you be accountable for your writing, people tend to write more and more effectively. I used writing communities all the time during my graduate school years. I am even planning one for this summer to work on another project. By creating a community around yourself, you build a network which builds your own confidence. Your community can help you create more and promote your completed projects.4. Find inspirationThe site as a whole is built to help you find inspiration in your own creativity. There are articles on finding ideas if you need help getting an idea going. There are many interviews and profiles of writers and artists throughout the site that discuss their artistic journey. The scope of the topics covered will allow almost anyone to find something that interests them. Plus, you might find a tip that helps you begin your own passion project. I particularly enjoyed the article From Idea to Book. The author maps out the process from idea to published work. Again, the reader needs to provide the creativity and imagination, but the process is outlined quite clearly.Blurb.com is built to help you find inspiration in your own creativity.5. Get publishedThis one is probably the most obvious. The main goal of the site is to provide a place for creators to self-publish their own projects. As mentioned, the site breaks down each stepâ€"design, printing, and sellingâ€" or thei r customers. Blurb makes the process seem easy and simple. If your goal is to publish, Blurb provides a number of guides and tips to making that happen. They provide information on choosing between printing on demand or making a large order. Throughout the whole blog there are a number of suggestions and advice on all aspects of publishing your work, whether it is the next great novel or a photobook for grandma.Final takeawaysAs a writer, I appreciate the efforts that Blurb has taken to provide a space where creators can publish, promote, and sell their work. Blurb provides worthwhile information and services that many people will want to use. The traditional publishing industry is brutal and not the best place for every person to go to when looking to distribute their own work. Blurb meets a need in our 21st century world where people, through social media and other platforms, are self-promoting themselves in ways never before thought of. To quote the site, Blurb is a self-publishi ng and marketing platform that unleashes the creative genius inside everyone. The site almost makes it seem too simple, but what it allows people to do is celebrate the hard work they have put into their creations.I suggest browsing the site and find some inspiration. But the next step must be for you to go out and create. Write, take a picture, paint, draw, dance, act, or do whatever moves you. Blurb is there to help you document and potentially sell your work, but you need to go and create. Find a place to work. I love coffee shops. I like the simple parade of people as they order their coffee or tea and move about their day. I also like quiet old libraries. The smell of books keeps me calm. But no matter where you create, the key is that you do it.

The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare - 1494 Words

Every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Many people believe in karma, the idea that personal actions dictate future endeavors, and do good deeds to ensure that they live a prosperous life. The logic is that if a person commits negative actions, negative events will happen to them. A prime example of this ideology is found in the play Hamlet. Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, was composed in 1601 following the death of Shakespeare’s son, Hamlet. The play focuses on the prince of Denmark, Hamlet, as he discovers the truth about his father s death and the events that follow. Shortly after the death of Hamlet’s father, Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother, marries Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius. Hamlet does not agree with the marriage of his†¦show more content†¦To expand, Laertes responds to Hamlet by explaining, â€Å" in my terms of honor/ I stand aloof; and will no reconcilement/ Till by some elder masters, of known honor,/ I have a voice and prece dent of peace/ To keep my name ungored.†(247-251). Laertes’s tone is nothing of acceptance and disregards Hamlet’s apology. Laertes tells Hamlet that until a master or honor explains to him how to forgive Hamlet without tarnishing his name; he will not. Laertes does not express forgiveness and plans to revenge the death of his father, which leads to his own death. If Laertes moves past the murder of Polonius and does not plan to murder Hamlet, he would not parish. The inability of Laertes to forgive and attempt to understand Hamlet’s apology subsequently affect Laertes in the end. The idea that forgiveness and love produce positive karma while ignorance and hatred create bad karma shines through during this scene. Ultimately, the negative actions of Laertes end in his downfall. The hostile and unforgiving tone of Laertes foreshadows the deaths of himself, Hamlet, Claudius, and Gertrude that soon follow. Both Hamlet and Laertes can prevent their deaths, but because of their negative actions, the equal and opposite reaction affects them and leads to their well deserved deaths. In addition to tone, irony highlights the idea of karma. We will write a custom essay sample on Job Evaluation a Cornerstone to Hrm Practices or any similar topic only for you Order Now Job analysis is aptly called so because success or failure of the human resource function in an organisation can directly be attributed to the consequences of job analysis (Siddharth, 2009 October). Siddharth (2009) further contends that Job analysis encompasses understanding and closely evaluating the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by an individual in performing a particular role. It’s like performing a Personal Profile Analysis of an invisible person. Once performed, job analysis would throw open a plethora of answers to how Recruitment, Performance Management, Training, Compensation benchmarking and several other processes should follow for the incumbent on the said job. Job analysis refers to procedures for systematically understanding the work that gets done in an organisation and the basic goal is to understand what people do, how they do it and what skills they need to do the work well (Jackson Schuler, 2003). According to Jackson Schuler, the results of the job analysis are used to write job descriptions. A job description spells out essential job functions, describes the conditions in which the job is performed and states special training or certification requirements for the job. For employees, job description produced through job analysis serves as a guide to work behaviour while for supervisors and managers; a job description serves as a guide to performance evaluation and feedback. This essay therefore focuses on trying to show that job analysis provides the foundation upon which to build virtually all components of HR system identified as follows;. RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION Recruitment involves searching for and obtaining qualified applicants for the organization to consider when filling job openings (Jackson Schuler, 2003). In the function of recruitment the job analysis would determine recruitment sources and methods. To find the most suitable employees for jobs and thus for the organisation as a whole, those involved in employee recruitment need to be fully aware of the relevant job description and person specification which can only be derived from comprehensive job analysis (Baired etal, 2008). Effective programs for recruitment should attract suitably qualified applicants and discourage those who are unsuitable. One would therefore say that knowing a defined set of competencies allows one to more efficiently target, within a candidates population those competencies for recruitment. SELECTION Selection is the process of obtaining and using information about job applicants in order to determine who should be hired for long or short-term position. Jackson Schuler (2003) contend that it begins with an assessment of the requirements to be met by the new hire, including technical aspects of a job and the more difficult to quantify organizational need (Jackson Schuler, 2003). Applicants are then assessed to determine their competencies, preference, interests and personality. For productivity and retention, companies such as Southwest, Lincoln Electric, Honda GE, and Toyota hire on the basis of whether an individual matches the job requirements and the corporate culture (Jackson Schuler, 2003) To do a proper selection of the candidate to be employed it is vital to establish the essential features of the job descriptions and person specifications to allow for objective and easier assessment of applicants (Baired etal, 2008). Selection criteria must be demonstrably job relevant and equitably applied, to facilitate comparison between candidates and the matching of candidates with jobs. They are invaluable in the initial short listing of large numbers of applicants, employment testing, interviewing and subsequent referee checking (Baired etal, 2008) Done very well selection practice ensures that employees are capable of high productivity and motivated to stay with the organization for as long as the organization wants to employ them. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT In general, an organisation’s training and development practices are its intentional efforts to improve current and future performance by helping employees acquire the skills, knowledge, and attitude required of competitive work force (Jackson Schuler, 2003). Rapidly changing technology, foreign competition, and changes in organisational strategy and strategic business objectives are putting pressure on organizations to train and develop employees for competitive advantage. This requires careful attention to needs assessment, program development and implementation, and evaluation. Four types of types of needs analysis-organisational, job, person, and demographic-are designed to diagnose systematically the short and long term human resource needs of an organisation (Jackson Schuler, 2003). Any discrepancies between the experience, knowledge, skills and abilities demonstrated by a job holder and the requirement contained in the job description and specification or list of competencies for that job provide clues to development needs (Baired etal, 2008). Training development is merely the development and assessment of said competencies for both the employee and the employer. However, without job analysis the organisation would have no way to know what to teach; train and develop and when to do it. PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT A performance management system is a formal, structured process used to measure, evaluate, and influence an employee’s job related attributes, behaviours, performance results (Arvey Murphy, 1998). Two components of performance management system are (a) performance measurement and feedback for individuals and team, and (b) the rewards component of total compensation (Jackson Schuler, 2003). A well designed performance measurement and feedback process directs employees’ attention toward the most important tasks and behaviours. It informs employees about what’s valued and provides information about whether the employees’ behaviour and results meet the expectations of managers, colleagues, and customers (Jackson Schuler, 2003) To emphasise the importance of performance management, it is said that; ‘It is estimated that if companies could get 3. 7% more work out of each employee, the equivalent of 18 more minutes of work in each 8-hour shift, the gross domestic product in the United States would swell by $355 billion, twice the GDP of Greece (Jackson Schuler, 2003). The job description and person specification, the result of the job analysis, provide the criteria for evaluating the performance of the holder of the job. Performance Management can therefore be said to be that by knowing the competencies required for each job or job family allows HR (or management) to track employee knowledge, skills and abilities and distribute them accordingly to wherever they may have the most impact within an organization. These competencies may also be tied to other organizational-level criteria for added impact and a validity check. As has been mentioned this is as a result of job analysis REMUNERATION MANAGEMENT Compensation or remuneration typically includes a mix of several elements, monetary and non monetary forms of rewards. Monetary compensation includes direct payments such as salary, wages, and bonuses, and indirect payments such payments to cover the cost of private and public insurance plans. Nonmonetary compensation include many forms of social and psychological rewards-recognition and respect from others, enjoyment from doing the job itself, opportunity for self-development (Jackson Schuler, 2003). Many workplace agreements emphasise the close relationship between job requirements, learning and development programs, career progression and appropriate salary and benefits systems. Baired etal, (2008) further contends that inappropriate remuneration packages may reflect a need for change of job requirements or adjusted pay scales, often in consultation with the relevant unions. It can be said that competencies help guide compensation models to a much more precise degree than more gross measures like â€Å"seniority. For example, a highly sought after software developer with very unique skills may be able to demand on the market a much higher salary than a typical MCSE who has been with the company for X number of years. A competency based compensation model would address that. Again, a job analysis done properly will help determine pay scale. PROMOTION OF WORKPLACE SAFTY AND HEALTH Another of the Human Resource function is the promotion of safety and health at the workplace. Job analysis procedures can be used to identify aspects of a job that may contribute to workplace injuries, and ergonomic principals can be applied to redesign the work environment (Jackson Schuler, 2003). Workplace safety and health refers to the physical and psychological conditions of a workforce that result from work environment provided by the organisation. Physical conditions include occupational diseases and accidents such as actual loss of life or limb; repetitive motion injuries, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, cardiovascular disease, other forms of cancer and other conditions that are known to result from unhealthy work environment include white central nervous system damage. While psychological conditions result from organisational stress and a low quality of working life, these encompass, dissatisfaction, apathy, and withdrawal and so on (Jackson Schuler, 2003). If an organisation takes effective safety and health measures, fewer employees will have short or long term ill effects as a result of being employed at the organization (Cooper Neck, 2000). Both the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) of the UK require evidence-based approaches to setting physical and medical employment standards. Proven fitness related strategies include redesigning the most demanding tasks, selecting and training personnel who possess the necessary physical attributes, and assessing and redeploying personnel to jobs within their capability. An essential precursor to pursuing these strategies is to conduct a job analysis to quantify the physical demands of the job (Rayson, 2000) . ). CONCLUSION Job Analysis is quite aptly called the â€Å"corner stone† of all HR activities because the success or failure of the HR function in an organization can directly be attributed to the consequences of Job Analysis. If not carried out or not conducted accurately and comprehensively the other HR processes will be ineffective and the cost to the organisation high in terms of productivity and the ability to retain valuable staff Job analysis encompasses understanding and closely evaluating the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by an individual in performing a particular role. It’s like performing a Personal Profile Analysis of an invisible person. Once performed, job analysis would throw open a plethora of answers to how Recruitment, Performance Management, Training, Compensation benchmarking and several other processes should follow for the incumbent on the said job. Get the job analysis wrong and you’ll get the wrong person while recruiting, inefficient and sometimes irrelevant performance management measures, increased training expenditure, improper pay with respect to the market and a whole lot of other issues. . This method of education is called single-sex or single-gender education. In this method, the male and female students attended classes in different classrooms within the same school or in different schools all together. Prior to the nineteenth century, this was the main method used in all educational institutions. However, secondary schools and institutions of higher education like universities used this method only while junior institutions could have both genders in the same classroom or school. During the latter years of the nineteenth century, things however took a turn whereby people started protesting against this method of education. Their protests were based on the lack of equality on the institutions in question. The issue of single-sex classrooms has been debated for several years now but what has been concluded is that it has advantages and disadvan tages just as the coeducational system does. For instance, the male schools were considered to have better facilities and their students were given prominence over their female counterparts when it came to job opportunities. For this reason, the protestors wanted fairer treatment or for the system to be scraped all together. Contrary to several people’s expectations, this campaign grew and had a large number of supporters. Therefore, many researchers have decided to investigate the claims that were brought up against the single-gender system of education. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, there was an upsurge of co educational schools in Europe especially. The coeducational schools admitted both genders into the same school and classroom. This was a significant change from the previous years where this action was considered unimaginable. Conversely, even with the establishment of coeducational schools, some people still defended the single-gender education system, as opposed to the coeducational system. In a short period, the coeducation system was adopted in several countries all over the world. As much as the coeducation tradition became more popular, come countries still had several schools that were based on the single-sex education method. Such countries included United Kingdom, Israel, Australia and the greater majority of the Muslim countries that followed the Sharia law. Single sex education has advantages and disadvantages that have been noted over the years. Supporters of the system claim that it has more advantages than the coeducation system while the reverse is true for the critics of the system. For this reason, the issue of the single-sex education is considered a very controversial issue. Supporters claim that the single-sex education system enables students to perform better than when they enroll in the coeducational system. Opponents, on the other hand, claim that these claims have not been proven and are baseless. For this reason, the matter has never been settled. Several researchers have taken up the matter in a bid to prove whether the system is indeed as good as the supporters claim or if it is the reverse, as the opponents’ state. The government funded some of the research while some private institution funded some others. Ultimately, it was decided that it was the decision of the parents to decide where they will send their children for their education. They may decide on either of the systems based on their needs for their children and the notion that they have on the matter. Most of the remaining single-sex schools are boarding schools and some are under the leadership of the church. For instance, in England, most single-gender schools are boarding schools that are under the leadership of the Catholic Church. Most parents who travel a lot in the course of their careers opt for such schools for their children. On the other hand, parents who not travel as often preferred to remain in proximity to their children and send them to the coeducation schools in their neighborhoods (Gurian, 56). Article 1 from textbook Rosalind Barnett and Caryl Rivers wrote this article on the issue of single-sex education. These two authors have written many works that pertain to this controversial matter. In this particular article, the authors state unequivocally that the differences in gender should not be the basis of the curriculum. That is, the curriculum should not be created based on the genders but rather on the betterment of both genders as one. They state that instead of focusing on the genders, they should come up with ways to improve all the genders for the society to view them as equals rather than one gender being more superior to the other. The article uses an example of the City of Boston. The School Superintendent of Boston wanted to create two public schools based on the single-sex system. The schools were to be a women’s leadership academy and a men’s public service academy (Barnet, 850). By the use of this situation, the authors have explained in detail why the matter is irrational and not beneficial for the citizens in Boston. This is because the city had planned to cut its costs during the financial period in question. However, the establishment of two single-sex school was to be very expensive since instead of the construction of one school, they intended to build two, for each gender. In addition to this, the success of the single-sex education system was shrouded in controversy and its success was, therefore, unproven. This is because several researchers had proved that the issue of gender was an inconsequential factor that determined or affected the success or failure of a school and its students. Spending such, a huge sum of money based on several people’s opinions seemed to be a rather unwarranted decision by the Superintendent of Boston City. In addition, the authors go on to provide reports obtained by several prominent researchers in this field. Supporter of the single- sex system claim that there is a difference in the way girls and boys process information, perceive matters and generally think. For this reasons, they suggests the inception of the single-sex system in order to ensure that both genders receive the information as best suited for them. In the case of coeducation, the instructors have to compromise in order to provide what both genders require. Establishment of the single-sex school, therefore, avoids the conflict of interest and both genders can get the best education based on their preferences. The authors have stated, in response to this notion, that scientists had discredited the theory of the difference in thinking several years ago. The researchers had discovered that there was not a severe difference in the way males and females thought. As much as there were some differences in the brain structure and its functions in both genders, this should not have been considered the reason behind the claim that there also existed a difference in the cognitive abilities of the two genders in question. However, most of the teachers had already accepted the myth that the male and female students thought differently and they have infused this theory into the students’ heads. Based on this, the authors have provided an example of a teacher in South Carolina who stated that girls understand science more by analyzing cosmetics. On the other hand, since the males are alleged to have verbal weakness, they should be given books based or war events rather than the literature classics. This should not be the same since such a teacher makes the students believe in the weaknesses they are claimed to have. However, such teachers should consider why they support the claims of male students being weak in literature yet several prolific writers like Shakespeare were male. In the case of females who are believed to be weak in math and science, scientists like Marie Curie should be considered in order to stop the myth from spreading even further. Finally, the authors analyze the success rate of the single-sex schools. Is it based on the differentiation in gender or by the methods employed in teaching the students? The single-sex system is made appealing by the levels of success that the schools boast of. Nevertheless, contrary to several people’s beliefs the success does not originate on the fact that the students have been separated but rather on the hard work they students and teachers put in. Students in such schools are motivated and the school provides all the amenities that they require in order to succeed. The authors state categorically that the inception of these schools will cost a lot of money but the outcome may not be promising. Instead of creating new single-sex schools, the government should use the money to provide more amenities to the existing schools. This will prove beneficial since their performance will improve dramatically. The maintenance of the single-sex schools will also become unbearable for the government and they will collapse, making the venture a complete failure. For this reason, the article has addressed the matter of single-sex education in detail by providing the reasons why it is not suitable especially in the United States of America and particularly in Boston. The article has outlined the disadvantages associated with the inception of the schools. In addition to this, the authors have suggested reasonable options that maybe made in order to improve the quality of education provided in the country. If these recommendations were taken into consideration, the public schools would enjoy the same levels of success the single-sex schools enjoy now. Article 2 from textbook This second article has been obtained from the recommended text that was used throughout the course. Sally Reed has written it. In this article, the author supports the notion that boys and girls thrive while in different environments for instance the classroom (Barnet, 865). Therefore, the single-sex schools are more suitable for the students. The author has based her opinion on the results of several researchers and medical facts that pertain to the matter of the cognitive differences that occur in ales and females. She takes the side of the single-sex system since she considers it to have a greater and more positive effect on the students in question. By taking up single-gender education in the country, she explains that the teachers will be able to address the specific needs of the students they have. For this reason, the performance of the students in question will undoubtedly improve dramatically. With such an improvement, the nation will also improve since they have capable people who join the ever-versatile job market. Subsequently the economy of the country will get better. For this reason, the author advocates for the inception of single-sex school all over the country. The developments of the brains of males and females have several different aspects. Differences in the behaviors of the two genders are claimed to be because of these differences. By the differences, most people imagine gigantic differences like the brain size for example. However, this is not the case; the differences are minute to say the least but they affect the genders quite adversely. One of these variations is that the area of speech in the brain in females is significantly larger than that of the males. For this reason, the females are alleged to be better I English Literature and poetry. However, this notion has been disputed since there are some males who are great poets and writers. Researchers have proven that boys benefit more from the single-sex schools than their counterparts do. This maybe attributed to the level of discipline that they obtain from such settings. It is common knowledge that boys are very active especially in the case of children between five and ten years. This hyperactivity causes them to joke around in class and they often miss what the teacher is teaching. Consequently, the performance of the boys is a lot worse. In the case of single-sex classrooms, the teachers use the hyperactivity of the children to their advantage by creating a more engaging environment for them to learn. The creation of such a curriculum makes the focus more on the education since it is fun and they do not have to play and ignore what the teacher is teaching. Therefore, the young will be learning while still having fun and will undoubtedly perform much better. In the case of girls, one of the attributes they posses is shyness. In a coeducational classroom, the girls talk in very rare occurrences. For this reason, they are not able to ask any questions of they do not understand what the teacher is teaching. Establishment of a single-sex classroom will change this remarkably. It has been noted that the girls talk more and participate more in class if they are in a single-sex classroom. This is because they do not have to compete for attenti0on with the males who are generally more rowdy. The method of learning used in such girls’ schools is not purely based on activities, but they are rather quiet like the traditional system. This method works best for the girls and their performance picks up. Based on these differences in learning, the single-sex education system is better. This is because it will have a positive effect on both genders in the positive. Therefore, girls and boys thrive in different classrooms. Article 1 from database This article has been obtained form an online database that contains scholarly articles on various matters. The article compares the controversial issue of the benefits of single-sex education against the disadvantages it may have on the students, teachers and nation at large. This article has used the example of characters in the bestselling book Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling to illustrate this matter. The author has compared the research and findings with the occurrences in this series of books. Most people may consider this unwise since the book is purely fictional, but it is acceptable since the writer is not presenting vague ideas. On the contrary, the author of the book has infused several occurrences that occur in the day-to-day lives of people. This article answers the question; â€Å"would have the two main characters have done better in single-sex classes?†(Younger and Warrington, 580) The series consists of seven books each a depiction of one year of schooling at a school called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The story revolves around three characters, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The story follows their friendship all through their years in school. From the characters, the school is coeducational and has both female and male students. The article with several references to these characters seeks to discredit the single-sex system of education. In addition to this, the article also encompasses a review of the single-sex schools in the United Kingdom. Several examples have been given to explain why the single-sex system should not be adopted. The main reason is that its positive effects have not been proven, but are rather a result of several peoples’ opinions with relation to the matter. The author of this article has decided to use the illustrations from the book Harry Potter since several people would identify with it since it is a common book. This would enable even the younger readers to understand what he was trying to explain in his article. As stated before, the disadvantages of the single-sex system outweigh the advantages associates with it. There is a general claim that the females are inferior to their counterparts when it comes to subjects like mathematics and science that require a lit of analytical thinking. From this opinion, the males were considered cleverer than the females. However, in the book Harry Potter, the author has discredited this notion by creating a superbly brilliant young girl, Hermione. As the book and several events unravel, the brilliance of Hermione is depicted more openly. At one time, during a lesson, Hermione helps her friend Ron to perform a spell, which he was unable to perform. From this occurrence, he advantages of the coeducation system are visible. Hermione would have performed well in any school, whether single-sex or coeducational. Harry and Ron on the other hand would have probably performed a lot worse without Hermione. For this reason, the performance would not have improved if they were in single-sex classroom. In subsequent occasions, Hermione helped her friends, Harry and Ron, academically. Based on this, the coeducational system is a better alternative to single-gender education. This is because it enables the students to form a good relationship with each other and members of the opposite sex. For this reason, the good relationship enables them to help each other out if they have problems in class. In addition to this, they are exposed to several other personalities and this enables them to get prepared for the world, which has several different personalities. In the case of the negative, the article states that the single-sex educational system is more beneficial even without concrete proof from researchers. They cla im that this is because the results are evident in the performance and discipline the students in the single-sex schools display. The greater number of the girls’ schools have brought about a concern about the success levels of their counterpart male students. This is because there are claims that the male students are performing poorly compared to the females. This is attributed to the fact tat most single-sex schools are female. For this reason, there have been recommendations to set up more boys’ schools in order to improve their performance. Supporters of the single-sex system claim that the system enables the students to develop independence and individuality as opposed to the coeducational system that exposes them to peer-pressure for instance. For this reason, students from single-sex institutions are perceived to perform better and to be more independent. In addition to this, they also have higher levels of discipline. This has formed the basis for their support on the single-gender system. This article has effectively explained both the benefits and disadvantages that are associated with the issue of the single-sex education system. By the provision of this information, the reader is able to make a well-informed decision pe rtaining to the issue of single-gender education. Article 2 from database This article has been obtained from a database as well. The author, Gerald Bracey, is an independent researcher on the issue of single-sex education and its repercussions on the society. The article has provided a detailed history of the inception of the single-sex schools, how they were abolished and the coeducational schools took over. The provision of this history enables the reader to understand why the system was put in place and why the instructors reverted to the coeducation system. In addition to this, the readers also get to know why the present supporters want to reinstate this method of learning in the country. This article has also provided the reasons behind the advocates’ intention to revert to the single-sex education system. The opposers have also given reasons why the system should not be adopted in the country. From this particular article, the reasons the advocates have seem to be more reasonable than those of the opposers are. This is because they dwell on one point but they just paraphrase it differently each time making it sound different yet it is the same thing. The opposing group claims that the single-sex system enforces sexism, which they are trying to eradicate. Advocates on the other hand state that sexism has been there and will continue to exist even without the establishment of the single-sex schools. This is because two different genders exist and they have different methods of thinking. The single-sex education system will not have a magnanimous effect on sexism since it is already present in the society. The advantages associated with the single-gender system are numerous according to the author. This is in comparison to the coeducation system. For instance in the case of females, the single-sex system has led to the improvement of their self esteem as opposed to when they are in the coeducational schools. This is because they are able to accept themselves as they are and for this reason, they become more comfortable with themselves. In addition to this, the presence of other girls around makes the acceptance faster since they all identify with each other’s problems and can help each other out if need arises. It was also noted that in the single-sex schools girls enrolled into courses that they often avoided in the coeducational setting. These courses included engineering and architecture mainly. This was because there was a perception that girls could not pursue those courses since they were difficult and so only the boys could pursue them. However, in the single-sex schools, the notion of superiority is not there and more girls venture into these courses. Another advantage of the single-sex system is that the behaviors of the boys are controlled better in that setting. Boys are commonly rowdy and may not be controlled I some situations. Single-sex schools on the other hand are able to control the boys and instill discipline in them simply by their approach to them. This may not be effective in the coeducational schools since a change in the learning system would affect the girls in the school adversely. For this reason, the single-sex system is a more effective learning system. Adolescence in the coeducational schools brings about many distractions for the students. The distraction is mainly due to the changes the students undergo at this time. Subsequently, the performance of the students is affected by the ‘distractions’ that ensue. Presence of the single-sex schools avoids such distractions and therefore, the students’ performance remains unaffected. In addition to this, problems like teenage pregnancies that occur often in the coeducational schools are avoided in the single-sex schools. With the numerous advantages the author has brought to light, he supports the single-sex school system. He has given several recommendations that may be used in order to ensure that the controversy is solved to some extent. The author does not believe in the establishment of only one system that should be uses in all the learning institutions in the country. However, he also has no problem with the inception of the single-gender institutions for the students and parents who prefer them. Opposition of the single-sex system completely is completely irrational since there are some students who prefer them and perform better in such institutions. For this reason, the country should accord freedom to the citizens to establish and enroll their students in whichever institution that they prefer. This will ensure the controversy ends as the author states (Bracey, 42). Article 1 from other independent sources A freelance writer has written this article on behalf of the great schools corporation. It focuses on the pros and cons of the single-sex education system. The author has explained briefly what the single-sex education entails and has further explains what factors affect the decision of the parents to enroll their students into the single-sex education systems. Afterwards the author has explained the pros and cons of this system separately and in remarkable detail. Finally, the author has outlined how the public has responded to this debate and their opinions towards the matter of single-sex education. The pros for the single-sex system are based on the difference in the learning abilities of the different genders. The differences that boys and girls have when it comes to learning have warranted the need for the establishment of the single-gender classrooms in several schools. Most parents who have enrolled their children into the single-sex classrooms seem very happy with the result s, as the author has noted. Such parents have then told other parents who have resorted to this system too. This is the reason why such schools are becoming more common in the country. The author has also obtained a lot of information from researchers who have conducted several studies in this field. The results show that the single-sex education has several advantages especially in the case of the performance of the children as opposed to the coeducational system. The article by enlisting the use of the researcher makes it more credible to the readers. On the other hand, the author has listed the cons that are associated with the single-gender system. For instance, she states that the system may not be successful since very few teachers are trained to teach specific genders. For this reason, the teachers may use wrong methods to teach their students and this may affect the students’ performance generally. The other cons revolve round the negative effect the system will have on the students in their later years. For instance, since the students are used to interacting with the same gender, they will have a difficult time associating with members of the opposite sex in the case of the employment areas for example. What the critics who claim this forget is that the students interact with each other after school and during the holidays. For this reason, their claims are rather baseless and the single-sex education system is advantageous based on the information provided in this article (Stanberry, 1). Article 2 from other independent sources This article is based on the legal battles that ensued when sine public schools took up the single-sex education system. The author is Abigail Pesta, a freelance writer. The article addresses how successful single-sex education is. There was a lawsuit against a public school because it had initiated the single-sex system as a voluntary experiment to determine hoe effective it was. The performance of the students improved a lot and as a result, more students enrolled into the program. The principal established the single-sex classrooms after he attended a seminar by a psychologist, Leonard Sax. Sax provided them with suggestions on how to set up the system in their schools. In addition to this, he also explained the advantages that were associated with this method of learning. Impressed by the advantages, the principal initiated the program that became a success. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the lawsuit. ACLU did this on behalf of one parent whose three daughters schooled in the same school in question. They complained that there was gender inequality in the single-sex classroom system. For instance, the boys’ classrooms were better lit than the girls’ classrooms and this was considered unfair. The principal defended his actions by stating that the male students need a more active environment in order to participate and concentrate during the lesson. The more active environment included the installation of brighter lights and more colorful wallpaper. For the female students, this was not necessary since they concentrate in a calm environment. His response to the claims was accepted since Sax also supported his claim. This article has addressed the debate that has been going on over the years about the single-sex education method system. The author has provided an example of a scenario in which the controversy came up (Pesta, 1). The issue of single-sex education will not be solved by the endless lawsuits that are filled against institution which have the system. The only solution would be a compromise between the advocates and the opposers of this matter. In such a compromise, they will accept the single-sex classroom system if it is voluntary for the patents and the students. This would be effective since it will now be the decision of the parents rather than the opposers or advocates of the matter. If this suggestion is not implemented, the controversy will see no end since no system will be accepted without some disapproval. In my opinion, single-gender education is very effective as has been proven by the performance of the students who learn using this system.

The Sinking of the Lusitania essays

The Sinking of the Lusitania essays In the early part of the twentieth century, the only way to traverse the Atlantic was by ocean liner. It was a time of fierce competition between rival lineswith passengers expecting not only a speedy crossing, but luxurious accommodations as well. In 1903 Lord Inverclyde created the Cunard Line. Construction soon began on two fast and luxurious liners that were to challenge the German vessels that had held the Blue Riband since 1897. The resulting sisterships RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania would be a firm reassertion of British supremacy at sea. Launched at the River Clyde in June 16, 1906, RMS Lusitania was a grand ship and the first of the two sister ships to be launched. At 785 feet in length and 31,550 gross tons, she took the title of largest liner afloat. Her maiden voyage took place September 7, 1907, and in October 1907 she recaptured the coveted Blue Riband from the German liner Deutschland, which Britain had failed to obtain since the industrialization of Germany. The construction of Lusitania was financed by generous loans from the British government. In return for the generous loans, the Admiralty could requisition Lusitania or her sister in times of war. This would be key in the demise of the Lusitania. World War I would eventually erupt. During the war the Allies blockaded Germany preventing them from receiving any supplies, food or munitions. This led to Germanys development of a new weapon called the U-boat or submarine, as we now know it. This would allow the Germans to form a counter blockade as well as sink all these unsuspecting ships with out getting caught. The Lusitania left New York harbor on May 1, 1915, nobody was expecting the tragedy that was soon to occur. Although a warning against Americans boarding British ships signed by the Imperial German Embassy had appeared in the morning papers on the day the vessel was scheduled to leave, no one figured they were in...

6 Steps to Finding a Second Job

6 Steps to Finding a Second Job Need a second job? The first thing you’ll need to do is figure out what kind of second job most suits you- do you want to work for someone else, or are you better off working towards starting a small business or trying self-employment? Then, think about your schedule. Most second jobs will choose you depending on the flexibility (or inflexibility) of the hours you have available. Do you need benefits? Is this a temporary solution? Or do you want a long-term gig? Figure out what sort of thing you’re looking for, then follow these easy tips towards finding yourself that extra paycheck. 1. Narrow your searches.Search parameters can be incredibly helpful when looking  for second jobs in particular, as you can select keywords that are deal-breakers for you, like â€Å"weekend† â€Å"evening† â€Å"freelance† â€Å"telecommute† â€Å"part-time† etc. and really narrow the field.2. Look for online gigs.Try looking for online jobs where you c an work from home- often in your pajamas- and still, supplement your income. Be careful to find the legitimate opportunities out there among the scams. Try online tutoring, or freelance writing, or even start an Etsy shop to sell your crafts.3. Go in person. If you’re looking for a second job in a restaurant or store or hotel, then going in person with a resume and a professional demeanor might just get you through the door. Make sure not to show up at the busiest times of day so you can actually get yourself noticed.4. Use your contacts. You’ve built a network for a reason. Use it. Put out feelers telling your contacts you’re looking to pick up a little extra work. You never know what you might turn up. Besides, they might come up with more unique opportunities than you could dredge up yourself. Try for something exciting or challenging or different to shake things up!5. Be upfront.Make it clear to your potential new employer that this would be your second job. T his is the best policy honesty-wise, but also will ensure that they are more understanding about your scheduling needs.6. Consider caregiving.Caregiver jobs are at an all-time high as far as demand is concerned. Whether you’re caring for pets or children or the elderly and infirm, there’s probably a gig out there that would work for you- and really help a family out when they most need it.

Management - Business Simulations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Management - Business Simulations - Essay Example The month end bank balance of ?7687 is decent enough to start with and is sufficient to meet the immediate cash needs as compared to the level of business activity. The slightly higher fixed costs of ?826 are indicative of the initial spending in research and networking which is absolutely crucial at this stage to take the business into the future. This is a step in the right direction at this stage. There is a net loss of ?778 and at this stage it is quite expected as the sales effort starts showing results only after some time. Besides, from the Time spent breakup (Appendix 1.2), it seems that the sales effort is greater than the overall marketing effort at this stage, since building cash inflow is a priority at this stage. The idle time shows that here is pressure to build up business and this is translated into sales activity which is more action oriented than the marketing activity. The same trend continues in February and is depicted in March ’13 report. In March’ 13, the bank balance is more or less maintained, indicative of even cash inflows and outflows. However, the expenditure and time on the marketing and product research activities shows an increase. The customer research and competition research is complete and the product redesign based on the research has been completed y this time. The business breaks even in the month of March 13 which is shown in the April 13. The bank balance is maintained and the business shows strong growth signs. The sales are increasing and the bank balance is building up with increase in new orders. The production time is increasing and the idle time is decreasing. The business has made a small profit of ?45. However, this trend is reverted the very next month owing to higher overheads in terms of spending business website. The website though a cost, is the right decision at the right time for the business, since, an online presence with the traditional marketing as well as supply chain management methods was hugely complemented by the same. Since at this time, the number of sales enquiries from traditional marketing methods is too low to sustain the business (Appendix1.3). The sales effort and its effectiveness has been maintained and is evident from the fact that the product stock at the end of the month is zero for a considerable period of time that is from Jan’ 13 to Feb’14. This apart from sales effort is also indicative of good inventory planning. However, by month May 13, due to lack of orders, the production capacity was idle for the most part. The scenario seems to be a result of overemphasis on research and planning at the expense of sales effort in recent past. The management was advised to give some more focus to the core activity of selling. This showed some result in the very next month, when the orders from previous month exceeded an amount of ?2870 and this is where the business starts making profit on a sustainable basis. The production capacity is util ized to a great extent and the idle time minimized. The growth in profit continues and by August, the production targets are being met. The Marketing team was advised to work out the possibilities of a long term business opportunity. The effort showed results in the form of the first customer contract by August 13 (Appendix 1.4). By September

Self-Presentation and Gender on Social Networking Sites Research Paper

Self-Presentation and Gender on Social Networking Sites - Research Paper Example These sites allow the users’ to create a profile that reflects their identity. A study by Magnuson and Dundes (2008) about the MySpace Profiles for 51 females and 49 males revealed that women had a better self presentation profiles on MySpace than men. Also they were more active that the males. The studies also revealed that although females dominate the social network sites, they have to depend on others for their sense of self as they do traditionally depend on the male in their families. A similar study by Manago et.al. (2008) revealed that social networking sites were a means to explore one’s own identity, engage into social comparison and express idealised aspects of selves they had dreamt to be. This paper tries to identify the ways in which males and females present themselves online in the social networking environment. The paper also intends to check if culture influences self presentation of genders in social networking. Keywords: Social Networking Sites, Gend er Difference, Self-Presentation Self-Presentation and Gender on Social Networking Sites Self-presentation is a very important aspect of today’s globalised world. According to Leary (1996) â€Å"Self-presentation is kind of impression management, which is the management of other’s impressions of a social unit such as people or organisation† (p. 17). ... Thus this subject has also attracted researchers to the study the gender differences in self-presentation on these sites. A study by Kornblum (2006) revealed the exploded popularity of these SNSs with users numbering to hundreds of millions in the recent years. However self-presentation on SNSs differs from face-to-face self-presentation. Self-presentation on SNSs differs because one can â€Å"inspect, edit and revise† one’s self presentation before it is available to others (Walther, Slovacek & Tidwell, 2001, p.110). These sites proclaim to help people get connected and share with the people in their lives. Thus SNSs create a real-life social network for people online. Although the SNSs are a replica of a real-life social network but the environment provided by the SNSs differs greatly from real life (cited in Hinduja and Patchin, 2008, p. 127). The studies have revealed that several people have 1000 other people on their friend list which is nearly impossible in the r eal life. These SNSs provide people with unique opportunities to stay connected to more people than they might otherwise have and to be able to know in their real lives. Also people can construct any kind of image about themselves that they would like to portrait to the people on their friend list. The self-presentation on these SNSs allows the users to construct an audience as they can add or remove friends from their social network in just seconds, with no more efforts but just a click on the mouse. Past research suggests that these SNSs are most popular among adolescents as it allows them to experiment with their identity. Research also suggests that adolescent girls use SNSs more than the adolescent boys as it

Basics Of Mutual Funds :: essays research papers

In this report I decided to take advantage of an opportunity to get information on how best to invest money for my daughter’s college fund. The choices are between Mutual funds or an IRA. Thanks to the research I did for this I have made up my mind how best to invest my money.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  My main research I did on the IRA is on the Internet through AOL. Through them I found out in a Traditional IRA’s you can contribute up to $2,000 per person per year tax free. In other words the $2,000 invested is deducted off your total income for that year. Yet when you retire and receive the money it is then taxed. Also in a Traditional IRA you cannot remove the money prior to retirement without being heavily penalized. In a Roth IRA you pay taxes on it the year that you invest the money. Though the Roth IRA does bring some benefits such as you can retrieve your money without being penalized as long as you opened your account over five years prior to withdrawal and your are at least 59.5 years old at time of withdrawal. Some exceptions are death, disability or first time purchase of a home. There is also an Educational IRA which you can contribute a maximum of $500 per year per child. This obviously is only good enough for a college education if you plan to invest in other places. On the AOL site I used it had a page where you enter in your date of birth and how much money you wish to contribute. I entered in both DOB-7/9/79 (approximately 46 years until retirement) and that I wish to contribute $2,000 a year. It then stated that with a Roth IRA I would have $1,058,685 and with a Traditional IRA I would have $1,036,239 (which I would have to still pay taxes on). Out of the two the obvious choice is the Roth IRA you pay taxes when you are working and have the extra money and it also has a higher turn over rate.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I then researched mutual funds. Mutual funds are a group of stocks together. It tends to be more stable then stocks since there is only one stock if it falls you’re out money, with a Mutual fund if one drops then the others generally tend to balance the loss out so you still tend to make money.

Gwen Harwood Relationships Throughout Poems Essay

Gwen Harwood’s poetry endures to engage readers through its poetic treatment of loss and consolation. Gwen Harwood’s seemingly ironic simultaneous examination of the personal and the universal is regarded as holding sufficient textual integrity that it has come to resonate with a broad audience and a number of critical perspectives. This is clearly evident within her poems ‘At Mornington’ and ‘A Valediction’, these specific texts have a main focus on motif that once innocence is lost it cannot be reclaimed, and it is only through appreciating the value of what we have lost that we can experience comfort and achieve growth. Gwen Harwood’s poetry explores the reality of human existence, utilising a number of personal experiences in order to impart meaning onto the responders. The poems, At Mornington and A Valediction, explore countless thematic concerns including the loss of childhood innocence, comprehending mortality and maturation of individuals. Utilising a regular variation of tense, between past and present, and her own personal relationships with others, Harwood’s poetry provokes an appreciation of the past, and reinforce themes, which highlights their universal significance. Within the beginning of the poem At Mornington, Harwood explores a childhood memory, at â€Å"the sea’s edge†, in order to highlight her apparent childhood strength in her naà ¯ve belief that she could defy nature by â€Å"walking on water/it’s only a matter of balance†, only to be saved by her father. This nativity is reinforced in the parable of the pumpkin, which grew upwards in â€Å"airy defiance of nature†. The biblical allusion with the attempt to walk on water reinforces the blind faith and innocence of the child which is contrasted to the personas self-awareness and acceptance of her own mortality, â€Å"at the time of life, when our bones begin to wear†. This childhood recollection can be deemed as the commencement of her acceptance of death; however it is only upon self-reflection on this experience as an adult that the persona can come to a complete acceptance of her own mortality, as portrayed in the simile â€Å"the peace of this day will shine/like the light on the face of the waters†. Similarly encompassing this experience is night owl, in which the child persona is blind to the nature of death, regarding herself â€Å"wisp-haired judge†¦the master of life and death†. Gwen Harwood’s poetry is steeped in romantic traditions and is underpinned by humanist concerns. Throughout Harwood’s poetry there is a continuing theme where human existence is  characterised by loss and consolation. Like At Mornington, A Valediction explores the importance of the balance between physical and spiritual love. Harwood explores the nature of both form of love and how each is needed to develop ultimate love. Harwood suggests that poetry can offer comfort and deepen the human understanding of life and love. This is portrayed through the use of sarcasm, rhetorical questions, direct speech, allusions, metaphors and imagery. This poem presents the basis on which the sorrow of physical separation can be transformed into joy this is evident within â€Å"my lover will come again to me, my body to its true end will give him joy† and depicts the emphatic tone and confidence in which her husband will return and is presented through future tense. This reflects on the interrelation between flesh and spirit in love and the necessary mix of the spiritual if love is to survive physical separation. Harwood’s A Valediction raises the idea that as humans we change and develop over time with a new sense of maturity and contentment with life. In this poem Harwood speaks about a farewell as she alludes to past poem by John Donne. However, she moves from a literal experience and memory to pensive reflection in order to create a contrast between the younger and older character. This is used by writing about movement from the past to the present and including its effect on the future. The varies of tense further highlights the changes over time as she focuses on the dualities of self and the universal emotions. In my thoughts, Harwood’s poetry engages readers through its poetic treatment of loss and consolation throughout relationships as well as its exploration of universal themes about human existence and processes of life. Harwood’s poetry validates the consoling influence of childhood experiences upon adult development evident in both At Mornington and A Valediction where they both explore one sense of loss and consolidation. Harwood cleverly includes personas with their own feelings and anxieties to outlook on the present and future and the power of memories held with past relationships. Relationships link within Harwood’s poetry as throughout life she experiences suffering and includes her personal voice and life within the story of her poem. In conclusion, Gwen Harwood deals with the constant relevant issues of loss and consolation by the enduring power of poetic treatment of age and youth. In my opinion, on the most profound of universal truths, there is no certainty in life and we must deal with events and situations as we encounter them.  Harwood’s poetry distinctly presents a slight difference throughout exploration of the relationship between age and youth, which has greatly shaped my own understanding of these specific effects. Her unique and personal manner allows the responder to not only form a deep empathy with her words, but also to critically consider one’s own life and experiences.
